How Do I Control My Virtual Server?

Virtualization has helped to improve hardware efficiency through consolidation of servers. It has also significantly lessened the time needed to launch a server online; today, you can do this in a matter of hours instead of having to wait for weeks to bring it online. This advantage has given businesses a lot of agility but with every new improvement, there are always issues to deal with. If these issues are not addressed right at the start, it may end up eating into the overall efficiency of a virtual infrastructure. Many virtual servers are being provisioned without any proper justification or approval. Some continue to consume resources even when they may no longer be needed. It becomes necessary to deal with these management challenges and control the virtual servers. IT managers feel that the virtual server sprawl can be controlled through the same processes or auditing measures which are employed for physical servers. So, whenever a new server gets requested it is important to evaluate the needs for it to find out whether it is really needed or it is being installed just for convenience. Industry watchers recommend using a server life-cycle management method through which a virtual server’s use and status right from creation to expiry gets tracked.
